How does a printhead work?

Xaar printheads use a piezoelectric semiconductor material called PZT. It is in this that the micro-scale channels that mechanically produce and fire the ink droplets are created. As part of the PZT manufacturing process it is poled: the material¡¯s atomic electrical charges are aligned in a particular, chosen direction. This is a key property because when an electric field is applied across the poled material, depending on the direction, it creates a physical deformation in the PZT and it is this that enables the inkjet process.

The basics

In a simplified overview, our technology consists of ink chambers packed together in to a printhead, divided by shared channel walls, each with an electrode attached. By using shear mode and shared walls we produce highly efficient printheads that can provide: standard single drop size printing ¨C binary; or greyscale: on-demand variable-sized drops for printing high-quality inkjet image solutions.
